The Indian nuclear establishment today said it would carry out a review of all safety features at each of the country’s 20 nuclear plants in view of the radiation leak in tsunami-devastated Japan, even as it sought to reassure that there was no reason to panic.

“The event of Japan will be reviewed in detail... Resulting out of such a review, any reinforce ment as needed would be implemented,” a late-night statement from Nuclear Power Corp oration of India Ltd, the public sector company that operates all nuclear power stations in the country, said.

The nuclear establishment in India also sought to dispel apprehensions. “Indian reactors are as safe as they can be. Of course, a natural disaster cannot definitively be ruled out, but chances of something like this happening in India are extremely rare,” said former secretary of Department of Atomic Energy Anil Kakodkar.

NPCIL pointed out that Indian reactors had coped well with other disasters.

“After the severe earthquakes of Gujarat, in Bhuj on January 26, 2001, the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station continued to operate safely. Similarly, during the tsunami event in 2004, Madras Atomic Power Station was safely shut down without any radiological consequences,” the statement released by NPCIL said.
