TRIPOLI, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Government forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi stormed and stationed in the eastern town of Ras Lanuf on Saturday, forcing rebels to retreat from the outskirts of the strategic oil town, Al-Arabiya TV reported.
The TV said rebels blamed heavy bombardment and shelling to their defeat at Ras Lanuf, which was controlled by rebels a week ago.
Earlier, a rebels spokesman said ongoing battles are only in the outskirts of the city, 615 km southeast of the capital Tripoli.
