Suicide Bombers Attack UN Office in Afghanistan
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for an attack Saturday on the United Nations compound in western Afghanistan. U.N. officials say at least two suicide bombers struck the compound outside Herat city, allowing insurgents to enter the building.
Authorities say Afghan security forces surrounded the building and killed at least one militant.
It was not immediately clear if any extremists remain in the building, and if there were any casualties among the U.N. workers.
Last year, several attacks targeted international operations in the Afghan capital, Kabul, including attacks on a U.N. guesthouse and the Indian embassy. (the voa)
