THIS summer, physicists celebrated a triumph that many consider fundamental to our understanding of the physical world: the discovery, after a multibillion-dollar effort, of the Higgs boson.
Given its importance, many of us in the physics community expected the event to earn this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics. Instead, the award went to achievements in a field far less well known and vastly less expensive: quantum information.
It may not catch as many headlines as the hunt for elusive particles, but the field of quantum information may soon answer questions even more fundamental — and upsetting — than the ones that drove the search for the Higgs. It could well usher in a radical new era of technology, one that makes today’s fastest computers look like hand-cranked adding machines.
The basis for both the work behind the Higgs search and quantum information theory is quantum physics, the most accurate and powerful theory in all of science. With it we created remarkable technologies like the transistor and the laser, which, in time, were transformed into devices — computers and iPhones — that reshaped human culture.
But the very usefulness of quantum physics masked a disturbing dissonance at its core. There are mysteries — summed up neatly in Werner Heisenberg’s famous adage “atoms are not things” — lurking at the heart of quantum physics suggesting that our everyday assumptions about reality are no more than illusions.
Take the “principle of superposition,” which holds that things at the subatomic level can be literally two places at once. Worse, it means they can be two things at once. This superposition animates the famous parable of Schrödinger’s cat, whereby a wee kitty is left both living and dead at the same time because its fate depends on a superposed quantum particle.
For decades such mysteries were debated but never pushed toward resolution, in part because no resolution seemed possible and, in part, because useful work could go on without resolving them (an attitude sometimes called “shut up and calculate”). Scientists could attract money and press with ever larger supercolliders while ignoring such pesky questions.
But as this year’s Nobel recognizes, that’s starting to change. Increasingly clever experiments are exploiting advances in cheap, high-precision lasers and atomic-scale transistors. Quantum information studies often require nothing more than some equipment on a table and a few graduate students. In this way, quantum information’s progress has come not by bludgeoning nature into submission but by subtly tricking it to step into the light.
Take the superposition debate. One camp claims that a deeper level of reality lies hidden beneath all the quantum weirdness. Once the so-called hidden variables controlling reality are exposed, they say, the strangeness of superposition will evaporate.
Another camp claims that superposition shows us that potential realities matter just as much as the single, fully manifested one we experience. But what collapses the potential electrons in their two locations into the one electron we actually see? According to this interpretation, it is the very act of looking; the measurement process collapses an ethereal world of potentials into the one real world we experience.
And a third major camp argues that particles can be two places at once only because the universe itself splits into parallel realities at the moment of measurement, one universe for each particle location — and thus an infinite number of ever splitting parallel versions of the universe (and us) are all evolving alongside one another.
These fundamental questions might have lived forever at the intersection of physics and philosophy. Then, in the 1980s, a steady advance of low-cost, high-precision lasers and other “quantum optical” technologies began to appear. With these new devices, researchers, including this year’s Nobel laureates, David J. Wineland and Serge Haroche, could trap and subtly manipulate individual atoms or light particles. Such exquisite control of the nano-world allowed them to design subtle experiments probing the meaning of quantum weirdness.
Soon at least one interpretation, the most common sense version of hidden variables, was completely ruled out.
At the same time new and even more exciting possibilities opened up as scientists began thinking of quantum physics in terms of information, rather than just matter — in other words, asking if physics fundamentally tells us more about our interaction with the world (i.e., our information) than the nature of the world by itself (i.e., matter). And so the field of quantum information theory was born, with very real new possibilities in the very real world of technology.
What does this all mean in practice? Take one area where quantum information theory holds promise, that of quantum computing.
Classical computers use “bits” of information that can be either 0 or 1. But quantum-information technologies let scientists consider “qubits,” quantum bits of information that are both 0 and 1 at the same time. Logic circuits, made of qubits directly harnessing the weirdness of superpositions, allow a quantum computer to calculate vastly faster than anything existing today. A quantum machine using no more than 300 qubits would be a million, trillion, trillion, trillion times faster than the most modern supercomputer.
Going even further is the seemingly science-fiction possibility of “quantum teleportation.” Based on experiments going on today with simple quantum systems, it is at least a theoretical possibility that one day objects could be reconstituted — beamed — across a space without ever crossing the distance.
When a revolution in science yields powerful new technologies, its effect on human culture is multiplied exponentially. Think of the relation between thermodynamics, steam engines and the onset of the industrial era. Quantum information could well be the thermodynamics of the next technological revolution.
The discovery of the Higgs — the confirming stroke of a grand, overarching theory of matter — will, eventually, yield a Nobel Prize, and when it comes the award will be justly deserved.
But the discovery’s impact on human society will most likely be dwarfed by the consequences of quantum information theory. The steady advances at its frontiers are turning us into safecrackers, nimbly manipulating the tumblers guarding the deepest secrets of nature and our own place within it. What we find when the locks snap open on the quantum world will surely be something far richer and far greater than our imaginations today can conceive.

State-level BrainCafe Budding Scientist Contest today
A small spark of a gas stove lighter that her mother used every day was enough for Varsshini R., a Class 6 student at Mount Litera Zee School in Hosur, to create an innovative device that generates electricity using mechanical pressure.
Her new device, made out of a small wooden plank, LEDs and piezoelectric material, was demonstrated at a press conference here on Friday under the aegis of BrainCafe, an activity-based learning programme for schools which is a joint venture of Zee Learn Ltd. and Gakken Educational Co.
How it works
Demonstrating the device, she said it works on the principle that electricity is generated from the electrons released by piezoelectric material when any pressure is placed on it. As it was a cost-effective way of producing electricity, the idea was applicable at public places such as staircases, footpaths and roads, the 11-year-old said.
“My aim is to become a scientist in the future,” the budding scientist added.
Sandhya Sriraman, school principal, said they were implementing the idea in their school to generate their own electricity.
Varsshini’s invention has also made its way to State-level BrainCafe Budding Scientist Contest 2012, which will be held on Saturday at the Insight Academy, 20, Mango Garden Layout, Konanakunte, here.
Forty young scientists from Bijapur, Hosur, Mandya, Mysore, Davangere, Gadag and Shimoga will participate in the event.
The national event, which will be held in November in Mumbai, will see participation from 9,000 students.

Well, well. The Korean tech giant isn’t far behind when it comes to bringing up the rear. The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is finally official. Not going by the name ‘mini’, it could actually pack a punch! With the successful run of its older brother, the S3 Mini hopes to mirror the success that defined the Galaxy S3.

Let’s take at a look at the features that Galaxy S3 Mini will sport.


Display

The younger sibling carries a Super AMOLED 4-inch display with a screen resolution of 800 x 400 pixels, fair bit of compromise when compared to the Galaxy S3.

The resolution on the S3 Mini seems out-of-date when the competition, hauling the same screen size, comes in better HD resolution schemes.

There isn’t tad much of a difference in screen resolution when viewed by the naked eye, though it’s not going to slip under the eyes of the experts.


Processor

Samsung Galaxy S3 runs on a quad-core Exynos processor clocked at 1.4GHz. It’s an interesting piece of detail when compared to the new kid on the block. It looks like the Korean giant halved the spec sheet with the Galaxy S3 Mini.

Powered by a 1 GHz dual-core processor, the mini S3 is quite efficient for running applications and looks more than comfortable to run Android 4.1 aka Jelly Bean. The chipset is a Mali-400 based GPU, meaning that the benchmarking results will be optimised; not nearly as capable as the Galaxy S3 but enough juice to power major applications and processes.


Operating System

It all comes down to who is garbed in Android clothing better; in this case, the S3 Mini.

While the Galaxy S3 is still shipped with the earlier version of the Android OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, the S3 Mini will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box.

It will grace Samsung’s TouchWiz UI while bringing in a more intuitive interface which the Jelly Bean carries.

Score one for the S3 Mini.


Design

The design echoes its elder brother, the Galaxy S3, with a few changes of its own. Stuffed into a thicker casing, the Galaxy S3 Mini mirrors the Galaxy S3 quite closely.

Its removable battery rear, its plastic casing, the colour scheme are all a shade less than the Galaxy S3. The dimensions stand at 9.9mm x 63mm and weighing in at 119 gm.


Connectivity

In the connectivity department, the S3 Mini isn’t behind the Galaxy S3.

Both devices carry NFC wireless comm., both have the industry standard Bluetooth/GPS and Wi-Fi and both have a microUSB.

The thing most about the microUSB is its MHL compliance. You can watch HD videos but with only the correct cable, a cable meant for Samsung’s own connectivity options. A downer, considering the USD 30 the cable costs.


Reportedly, Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is expected to hit the market during Christmas and it is expected to be priced between USD 350 to USD 430.

While the classic 34B was the top-selling bra size at one of Britain's best known department stores two years ago, today it's a generous 34DD, suggesting that women could be expanding too.

According to sales figures from Debenhams, those in the North, Midlands and Ireland tend to buy the bigger sizes, while women in the South and Scotland are a little less busty.

Wales, however, wins the biggest average bra award, with an E-cup being the bestselling size in its stores there.

Nearly four in five women questioned in the Debenhams survey said that they had squeezed into a bra that was too small for them.

The chain's head of lingerie buying and design, Sharon Webb, said there had definitely been a change.

"Sales suggest that breasts are bigger than ever before," the Daily Mail quoted her as saying.

However, those that aren't are certainly getting a little help.

Padded and push-up bras made up 70 per cent of bra sales in Debenhams stores this year, compared with 36 percent in 2010, suggesting that that women are keen to make the most of their figures.

"Confidence is changing the shape of the nation," Webb said.

Webb suggested that curvaceous women like Nigella LawsonDita von Teese and Beyonce were making other women feel more confident about their own fuller figures.

"Fit is of paramount importance," she said.

"A great-fitting bra makes you look incredible on the outside and feel fabulous on the inside," Webb added.

Noon is a bad time to visit Maddur. The bus stand is grey and parched, the neighbouring all-night coffee shop — so beloved a haunt of Bangalore’s young couples — is unrecognisably torpid, and the roadside stores wear a general look of disinterest. Even State Highway 17, the town’s big, throbbing lifeline, appears somewhat subdued.

Maddur’s celebrated vadé too shares in the quietude at this hour, hardly looking the jolly, ubiquitous snack it is made out to be. There are indeed vendors thrusting buckets of the stuff up at bus windows — a picture familiar to generations of passengers on the Bangalore-Mysore route — but only a couple. Their vadés are disappointing, small and wafer-like, worth no more than their two rupees. Further down the road, bakeries look lazy and empty, their vadés thicker than the ones at the bus stand but cold nonetheless.

Highway sensation

The highway is necessary to put the Maddur vadé story into context, though; SH 17 has been integral to the phenomenal popularity of the product. Sitting 80 km from Bangalore and 60 from Mysore, Maddur is the perfect stop on the highway for travellers between the cities. And when the length of the whole journey is (roughly) only three hours, the halfway halt lends itself more to a quick snack than a complete meal. It is this demand the vadé has relentlessly met.

The hawking starts 30 km before Maddur and extends to a similar distance past it, beginning at Ramanagara in one direction and Mandya in the other. Vendors wait at traffic stops at each major town on that route, waving packets of vadé at car windows, while any self-respecting eatery will stack a mound of the stuff on the counter.

But the road didn’t always supply the Maddur vadé’s clientele; in fact, the dish was born alongside the tracks in a moment of expediency. The story, apocryphal or not, is set sometime in the first half of the last century at the Maddur railway station. One of the “pakoda” (the exact nature of the fritter is debated) vendors on the platform leaves his frying too late one day, with the next train barely minutes away. In desperation, he hits upon an idea: rather than waste time attempting to roll the dough into balls, he flattens it between his palms, and then hurriedly fries the resulting patties. The preparation is immediately popular with curious passengers; so much that when the vendor returns the following day with the original stuff, they demand to be served the new vadé.

This vendor of legend, H. Nagaraju claims this dusty Friday afternoon, is Madhvachar, a direct ancestor of his. The 60-year-old Nagaraju owns the popular Maddur Tiffanys restaurant (now operating out of three neighbouring properties on SH17), the big daddy of eateries in Maddur. “I can’t tell you exactly how far back it was but it’s true. But although the vadé was born, it didn’t achieve its present status for a long time.” The credit for that, Nagaraju says, must go to his uncle H.D. Hebbar, who perfected the recipe in the 1970s, and brothers Subramanya and Jayaprakash, who then identified the potential of the highway as a market for their product.

“Channapatna has its toys, Ramanagara its silk, Srirangapatna its fort, Mysore its palaces; but what do we have?” asks H.N. Chathura, Nagaraju’s son. “When these burger joints came up on the highway, we feared our business would be hit, but nothing has changed. It’s remarkable. We owe everything to this vadé.”

Before Tiffanys opened in 1990, Nagaraju’s elders ran other establishments in town; they still operate the Refreshments Room at the railway station, something they’ve done since 1954. “Today, it may only be 15 per cent of our total business, but it’s still important to us,” Nagaraju says. “But we have to sell it for not more than six rupees, so obviously the quality is not the same it is here.”

Tiffanys itself is largely empty this afternoon, except for the odd family. Although there is little sign of it outside, an industrial amount of activity gets underway in the kitchens as the clock hits three. In a little furnace of a room, its walls and switches thoroughly blackened over, Subbanna and Nanjunda sit on either side of a giant tray. The latter works the onions into the dough, before tossing chunks of it to his partner. Greying, toothless Subbanna — 50 years he’s been at this job — sets the dough on a wooden anvil, flattens it with the back of his palm, and slides it into the oil. Two frying cycles later, the air is thick with the smell of the vadés (legend has it, reveals Nagaraju, that in the “olden days” the aroma travelled as far as the highway — a few hundred metres from the railway station).

Going places

As evening falls and vadés are transported out of kitchens everywhere, Maddur whirrs into life. Shops are full, lights are on, and the town’s favourite export looks its gay best.

The crowd is building at Tiffanys too, the vadé invariably on every table. It is thick yet crisp, the burnt onions oddly still juicy. Some would call it overpriced at Rs.12, but it’d be impossible to mark it any lower with their quality of ingredients, protests Nagaraju.

At the Sri Basaveshwara Canteen, a slightly more modest outlet on the highway, 12-year-old Ravi and his mother have their hands full. “You find a lot more people in the evening,” he points out, serving hungry customers. “Somehow we never tire of eating it.”

A white-knuckle “share-auto” ride away from the bus stand is the railway station, where it all first began. Vendors S.K. Nagaraj and Lalu wear their Southern Railway coats, wheel their carts out, and wait — with the ease of those who know exactly how long it is going to take — for the 6:15 Tirupati passenger. “I sell idly and masala dosa too,” he smiles. “But there’s only one thing they want to buy.”

HOW IT’S MADE

(for approximately 15-20 vadés)

Ingredients

1/4 kg onion

1/4 kg rava

1/8 kg maida

Salt to taste

A pinch of rice flour

Groundnut oil

Method

Cut the onions into thin strands or threads and pour a little oil on them. Onions are the vadé’s principal ingredient, and the juicier they are and the better they’re cut (first held one way under the knife, then rotated by 90 degrees), the better the dish will taste. Add the rava and salt; the moisture in the onions is sometimes sufficient for them to mix with the rava, but a little water is also added. Maida is now added and mixed well; care should be taken to see that the dough is not kneaded at any point but just gently worked. To make the vadé crisp, a tiny amount of rice flour is added.

It is critical that this dough is now fried immediately; the rava should linger for as little time as possible if it is to retain its coarse nature. The frying (in lukewarm oil) is done in two stages: the vades are first fried for a few minutes (till the air smells of them) so that they lose any moisture; any oil is allowed to drain before they’re fried a second time, this time till golden brown. Eat with chutney.

The triathlon is one of the more grueling and rewarding experiences for any athlete because it pushes our bodies nearly to their breaking points and the completion of one gives the athlete a sense of accomplishment that not many others will feel in their lifetimes. It is also a sport that is rising in popularity, and as it becomes more popular it also becomes more appealing to younger generations.

If your child is interested, what should you look out for as a parent to ensure their safety? Here are 10 concerns you may want to watch for as your child readies themselves for this new adventure:

Slow and steady wins the race – 

The idea of so many marathons, races and triathlons is to beat out your PR (personal record), beat your opponents, and throw yourself full throttle into the race. If you are the parent of a child racing in one of these events, encourage your child to take their time and do their best. There is no shame in being unable to finish the race.

Know your child’s limits –


 Many triathlons take place in the summer time, and if you live in a part of the world where summers equal blazing hot temperatures, as a parent you should be up on your basic medical knowledge. Heat stroke and heat exhaustion are two of the biggest concerns for this type of activity, so monitor your child’s effort and make sure they don’t fall ill. The hardest part? Swimming – Many first time triathletes are surprised to learn that the swimming portion of the event is probably the hardest. Swimming works every muscle in your body and can wear out a person quickly. It’s also the first part of the triathlon, so it’s imperative that you be able to finish the swim portion so you can move on to the biking and running portions. Make sure your kids have a good grasp on the swimming portion before throwing them to the wolves.

Any and all injuries – 


Pulled muscles, skinned knees, and bumps and bruises are all part of your child’s outdoor activity, but they might be a little more common as your child becomes more interested in sports like triathlons. As a parent, it’s best to brush up on some of the common minor injuries that your kids might suffer, and to know the proper first aid for each situation. Start with the sprint triathlons – 


The big triathlons aren’t something your child should tackle on their first outing. With swimming distances of more than two miles and the biking portions ranging anywhere from 50-100 miles, it’s no easy feat. If your child wants to race in a triathlon, begin with a sprint triathlon, a perfect fit for beginners. The swimming, biking and running portions are on a much smaller scale. Across the country, there are triathlons offered for children ranging from 6 to 17, which each age level focusing on that child’s skill and ability.
The Sun – Any time spent outside training for a triathlon should come with precautions for your skin. Using plenty of sunscreen will keep the kids from burning and keep them from missing training time due to burns. Too much exposure to the sun without proper protection can possibly result in skin cancer later in life.

Over working – 

If your child becomes serious about training for a triathlon, make sure to limit their exposure to the workout process. Too much swimming, biking or running can wear down a kid and lead to injuries. Be cautious and encourage your children to take their time.
Have a set schedule – This concern falls in with #4 and #7 on this list. Having a schedule of biking, running and swimming in variation will keep them interested and keep them from getting bored. Alternating between the three events on different days will also help work different muscle groups, further preventing injury.
