Taliban, ISI deny Mullah Omar heart attack report
Daily Times, Pakistan.
KANDAHAR: The Taliban and the Inter-Services Intelligence on Thursday denied a report suggesting that Mullah Omar had suffered a heart attack and was treated with the help of the intelligence network. Both poured scorn on a Washington Post report that quoted a private intelligence network saying the Taliban’s spiritual leader had been hospitalised in Karachi and had suffered some brain damage.
The Post said the one-eyed leader, who disappeared after the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan, appeared to have suffered a heart attack on January 7 and had been taken to a hospital near Karachi.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahib said, “Supreme leader Mullah Muhammad Omar is absolutely fine and healthy and is continuing his jihad activities in Afghanistan.” A spokesman for the military, in a statement, strongly contradicted the news item. afp
