Australia’s defense chief says a rogue Afghan soldier who shot dead his Australian mentor last month has been tracked down and killed by a U.S. and Afghan special forces team.
Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston said in a statement on Monday the overnight operation had intended to capture Shafied Ullah but the team was forced to shoot him when he drew a pistol.
Ullah has been on the run since an Australian army cook involved in mentoring an Afghanistan National Army brigade that included Ullah was shot dead at a patrol base in the Chora Valley in Uruzgan province May 30.
The team tracked him to his home district in Khowst province on the Pakistan border.
Air Chief Marshal Houston said a man believed to be Ullah’s brother has been detained for questioning.
Afghan soldier who shot mentor killed: NATO
NATO says that an Afghan and international force have found and killed the Afghan soldier who shot dead his Australian mentor last month.
The statement by NATO forces says that the shooter was killed on Sunday when he tried to pull his pistol on troops attempting to capture him in Khost province.
NATO says the man, Shafiullah, had no affiliation with any insurgent groups. Afghan army officials have said previously that the shooter was likely an insurgent who had infiltrated the army.
Separately, NATO says an international service member was killed in a bomb attack on Monday in southern Afghanistan.
