A 19-year old Switzerland girl, Tenzin Yangkyi was crowned as Miss Tibet 2011 on Sunday-a title to become a role model for spreading awareness among the Tibetan women, both in India and elsewhere.

She was among six contestants, who participated in this year's event that had all shades of beauty and colours of the Tibetan culture, modeling and talent. She has just completed her High School and has plans to pursue a modeling career.

Yangkyi was also crowned Miss Photogenic .

Born in 1993,Yangkyi when asked by judges as how she will contribute to the cause to Tibet, said “Tibetan women are educated, beautiful but they need role models, who need to ensure their effective participation towards Tibet's cause. Miss Tibet can be the role model to spread mass awareness.”

Yangkyi feels that Miss Tibet means representing Tibet. The name itself gets the attention of the media which is the ultimate way to raise Tibet's voice to the world.

Along with the crown, she won Rs one lakh as cash prize.

Her close competitor Ngodup Dolma, a 25-year-old, who hails from Australia was declared the first runner up. She received a prize money of Rs 50,000.

Lobsang Wangyal, Pageant director, who single handedly has been organising the event for past years, even facing a lot of opposition from within the Tibetan community said, “It was a very satisfying experience. Six girls participated in the pageant as compared to three last year.”

Other girls participating in the contest include Chemi Lhazom and Tenzin Sangmo from India and Tenzin Khecheo from the United States.
