Herbal major, The Himalaya Drug Company is now stepping up its marketing efforts with its diabetic drug portfolio.

There is growing awareness on herbal drugs to control diabetes. The well-researched and evidence-backed phyto-pharmaceuticals, has now caught the attention of the medical experts who are convinced about the efficacy of plant medicine to treat the diabetes disorder, AM Jiandani, Business Head—Pharmaceutical Division, The Himalaya Drug Company told Pharmabiz in an email interaction.

Currently, around 60.1 million in India are affected with diabetes. The condition has also become a global health concern and doctors are open to prescribing evidence-based phytopharmaceuticals. This is where our products Diabecon and Diabecon DS are faring extremely well. The brands are growing at 20-25 per cent year-on-year, he added.

On the patient front, the company is engaged in massive patient education through information leaflets and patient monitoring sheets, which is provided through doctors at the clinics. Regular Diabetes Detection Camps are held where the company can reach out to 60,000 – 70,000 patients annually.

For the management of diabetes mellitus, Diabecon is a formulation made from natural herbs, which includes gymnema (meshashringi) and Indian kino tree (pitsara). It is effective in reducing high glucose content in the blood, modulating lipid profile and minimizing long-term diabetic complications. The drug is recommended for the treatment of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (Type II) as a monotherapy or as an adjuvant to other oral anti diabetic drugs.

In the case of Diabecon DS, which is double strength phytopharmaceutical formulation, it is recommended for the management of type II diabetics and for complications resulting from the condition, such as high cholesterol levels and retinopathy.

Further, the company under its Pure Herbs’ range has Karela and Meshashringi recommended for diabetics. Moreover Karela contains ‘plant-insulin' or peptides resembling insulin that works like natural insulin secreted from the human pancreatic glands. It is recognized for its potent anti-diabetic properties.

Meshashringi, known as 'sugar destroyer' abolishes the taste of sugar in the mouth. The herb is also credited with anti-diabetic properties and is helpful in maintaining normal blood sugar levels in the body.

Indian anti diabetic market, which is dominated by allopathic drugs, is pegged at Rs.2,600 crore and is registering a growth rate of 7 per cent year-on-year. The size of the oral anti-diabetic market is around Rs.1,900 crore and that of insulin which are the injectables stands at Rs.718 crore. In the ayurvedic segment, the market leader is Hyponidd from Charak Pharma Pvt. Ltd followed by Diabecon, stated Jiandani.
