New Delhi: HDFC Chairman Deepak Parekh has come down heavily on both the Opposition and the coalition government saying that their style of politics is hurting India's growth. Speaking to Karan Thapar on Devil's Advocate, Thapar said, "Disruption in politics is not good and what we saw in Parliament gives you a little negative feeling on democracy."
Deepak Parekh: The role of an opposition party anywhere in the world is to oppose. But in a democracy, dissent is acceptable, disagreement is a part of democracy, but not distortion, not breaking up Parliamet everyday. Disruption in politics is not good and what we saw in Parliament this session and the earlier session gives you a little negative feeling on democracy. What are we doing? Is it a victory of democracy or is democracy becoming a big curse for us? No decisions can be taken if every item, every policy issue which the ruling party puts up is opposed by the Opposition by disrupting Parliament, by dislodging Parliament. So, I think we need to have a better system. Everyone has their day in the sun. The Opposition will get their day in the sun. But I think the Opposition party must also behave much more responsibly, the coalition partners, in a coalition government must also behave more rationally.
Karan Thapar: If I understand you correctly, not just the behaviour of the government, but also the response of the Opposition has thrown in to question the functioning and efficiency of India's democracy.
Politics hurting India
Deepak Parekh: Yes, unable to take decisions. This is because the political system, the democracy, the way it is working with so many parties and so many coalition partners, it becomes very difficult.
