Sex Crimes --- "what type of world we're coming to!"

Three teens charged with elderly woman's rape.

By correspondents in Detroit  From: Fox US News, August 29, 2010

THREE US teens aged 15, 17 and 18 have been charged over a brutal attack on a 90-year-old Detroit woman. Police say they forced their way into the woman's home and raped her.
Two of the teenage suspects were arraigned Saturday in connection with the rape and robbery of a 90-year-old Detroit woman.

The crime not only horrified the Detroit community, it brought them together,
reported myFOXdetroit.com.
Maurice Randall, 17, and Anthony Hardy, 18, both of Detroit, were arraigned Saturday along with a 15-year-old Detroit boy whose name is not being released because he's a juvenile.

The crime took place August 12 on Detroit's west side. The attack angered residents who started patrolling their neighborhood with bullhorns urging witnesses to come forward. Police say more than 200 volunteers played a key role in helping solve the case.

Volunteers help nab suspects in rape of 90-year-old

Detroit -- Outraged volunteers who patrolled a west side neighborhood after a 90-year-old woman was raped were instrumental in helping police nab suspects, investigators said.
Police are questioning four men in connection with the Aug. 12 sexual assault.

The attack angered residents, who began patrols with bullhorns, imploring residents who knew anything about the attacks to share information.

"The assistance of the community definitely contributed to us apprehending the suspects," Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens said. "There are four people we're questioning who are possibly connected to the case."
The incident on Leslie Street was the last of three break-ins involving elderly women that occurred on consecutive days.

Two men reportedly entered the 90-year-old woman's home by bending security bars and crawling through a basement window.
Community activist Raphael B. Johnson, who led the patrols, said the group persuaded residents to come forward last week. "There were two people we talked to who were able to lead the police to (the suspects)," Johnson said.  "We were putting the pressure on for people to tell us what they knew, and they told us what they probably wouldn't have told the police."

Stephens said investigators are not yet releasing details about the arrests because the case is still open.
Nimrod Sherman, the victim's grandson, said he was grateful for the help.
"I can't thank them enough," said Sherman. "My grandma is doing better; she's still healing. So many people sent prayers, and came out and searched with us. It was great to see."

'Good' bacteria in yoghurt may end your bed bug woes

Sun, Aug 29 11:10 AM

London, Aug 29 (ANI): If there's one thing that absolutely kills off a good sleep, it's bed bugs, but now scientists have found a new way of getting rid of them - by using yoghurt.

Probiotic yoghurt has 'friendly' bacteria. So now scientists say that bed bugs can be wiped out by loading these good bacteria into the mattresses.

How? The yarn the mattress is made of is dipped in a special vat of liquid containing billions of microscopic capsules.
"When people sleep their body weight applies pressure to the mattress. That pressure breaks some of the capsules and releases friendly bacteria," The Daily Star quoted one expert as saying.
"The good bacteria treatment lasts for about ten years and that's the -average life of a mattress," the expert added.

Bacteriologists at Belgium's University of Ghent showed that colonies of bugs like dust mites could be wiped out in six weeks.
The beds are to go on sale in the Tesco Direct catalogue. (ANI)

Sex crimes - How to prevent.

Tips for women to prevent sex crimes
Sun, Aug 29, 2010
New Straits Times
KUALA LUMPUR - Being old, unattractive or having your period does not deter a rapist.

In fact, he could have a fetish for elderly women, said founder of the Malaysian Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association (MVFRA) Captain K. Balasupramaniam.
In other words, any woman can be a potential rape victim.

This was greeted by gasps from his female audience at a three-hour "City Survival Skills" programme held at the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) auditorium yesterday. The programme, jointly organised by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, Yayasan Bakti Nusa Malaysia and Persatuan Belia Rakan Nusa, was also attended by Pandan member of parliament Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.
It was an eye-opener for the women who listened with rapt attention to Balasupramaniam's case studies on violent and sexual crimes against women and useful tips and tricks on how women can safeguard themselves against potential threats and danger.

"Most of the time, dangerous situations can be avoided if we understand the three types of danger zones.
"For example, if you're in the office during working hours then that means you're in the green zone.
"The yellow zone is when it's already 5pm and a few colleagues have left. This is when you know there is a potential threat within your parameter.
"But when everyone has left the office, then you must already be in self-defence mode because this is when you're in the red zone."

Balasupramaniam said women must never let down their guard even when a security guard is in the office.
"Anyone can rape you as long as there is opportunity and time," he said, citing a list of case studies on women who were raped and murdered by men from various backgrounds.

He shared with the audience how women could create opportunities for themselves to escape from their attackers with some self-defence tips.
"If they grab you from behind, use your head and swing back into their faces to break their noses or kick them in the shin," he said.

Balasupramaniam also shared with the audience how women could make their homes burglar-proof and prevent snatch thefts by using handbags that have clasps on the straps.
"When the snatch thief grabs your handbag, the clasps will give way and they will be left with only the straps.
"Don't get handbags with stitched straps as they won't snap and you may end up being dragged along with the bag," he said, adding that women should carry a water-based pepper spray.

Health and Fitness --- Cancer Signs

Eight Cancer Signs Identified.

London, August 28 (ANI): Researchers have highlighted the eight unexplained symptoms that are most closely linked to cancer.

The Keele University team also points to the age at which patients should be most concerned by the symptoms, which include blood in urine and anaemia.

The other symptoms are: rectal blood, coughing up blood, breast lump or mass, difficulty swallowing, post-menopausal bleeding and abnormal prostate tests, reports the BBC.

Cancer Research UK said unusual changes in a person's health should be checked.
The figure for each symptom was calculated by combining the results of 25 previous studies.

They found that, if the patient was below the age of 55, there were only two signs, which reached the 'one-in-20' threshold. These were a rectal prostate examination, which gave abnormal results, and a breast lump.

After 55, but only in men, there was evidence that difficulty swallowing could be a sign of oesophageal cancer, while blood in the urine was highlighted as a particular concern for men and women aged over 60.(ANI)
