We're completely aware of how modern refrigeration is a substantial practice in every kitchen and household. It goes a long way in preserving our food and maintaining its quality.

But did you know, despite popular belief, refrigerating certain foods can actually change their flavour (not in a good way). This is not it. It can even reduce their nutritional quality, or accelerate the spoiling process. Keep reading to find out the food items you are never supposed to refrigerate. We bet some of these are sitting in your fridge right now!

1) BREAD
It is perfectly fine to freeze bread, but keeping it in the fridge causes it to dry faster. And you end up eating dry bread. Instead, keep what you'll eat within four days at room temperature and freeze the rest. Store in a cool cupboard or bread box for a fresh slice.

2) HERBS
It's natural instinct to stuff the fresh herbs, you just bought from the grocery, right onto the fridge. But did you know herbs wilt faster in the fridge? You could place them in a water-filled glass jar on your kitchen counter to to keep it fresh and crisp.

3) POTATO
Refrigeration adversely affects the flavour of potatoes, therefore it is best to store them in paper bags. Remember, plastic bags promote moisture and speed decay process.

4) FRUITS like ....
Avocado, apples, bananas, citrus fruits, berries, peaches, apricots, and nectarines should be stored out of the fridge. Refrigerating these fruits will result in loss of flavors and textures. However, you can refrigerate these fruits for 30 minutes prior to eating if you want a crisp bite. Store oranges, lemons, and limes at room temperature on your kitchen counter. Just be careful not to bunch them too closely, or they will tend to mold. Don't store an underripe avocado in the fridge, but an already ripe or cut avocado can be refrigerated.

5) ONION
The best way to store onions is in a paper bag in a cool, dark spot, away from potatoes. Potatoes tend to release moisture and gases that can cause onions to rot. They soften and impart an oniony scent on nearby foods. The moisture of the fridge softens the onions and moldy.

6) SALAD DRESSINGS
Just like other condiments, most salad dressing, especially ones that are vinegar or oil-based, are just fine stored outside the fridge. However, cream, yogurt, or mayo-based dressings should be stored in the fridge.

7) TOMATO
Tomatoes lose their flavor and start becoming mushy when stored inside the fridge. In order to ripen the tomatoes faster, however, store them out of the fridge in a paper bag. Once ripe, they'll last for about three days.

8) KETCHUP, SOY SAUCE
Thanks to the vinegar and preservatives, the saucy ketchup and soy sauce will be just fine without refrigeration, even after it has been opened.

9) CEREAL
Your morning cereals will be fine and happy outside the fridge. So don't upset them.

10) OILS
Pretty much all oils are safe to store at room temperature. If the oil has a lower saturated-fat content, such as safflower or sunflower, it will benefit from being kept cool, so store it in a dark cabinet or the fridge door. The only oils that you must refrigerate are nut-based oils.

11) COFFEE
You all know this. Coffee fares best in an airtight container. In fact, refrigeration condenses coffee and reduces the flavor.

12) PICKLES
High on preservatives, pickles will stay fresh outside the fridge. Store it in an open space, so air can move around it.

13) MELONS
Melons normally do best outside the fridge. Once refrigerated, they tend to break down and become powdery and grainy. So to keep the flavour intact, melons need to be stored at room temperature. However, after cutting, you should store the melons in the fridge for three to four days.

14) PEANUT BUTTER
No need of refrigeration, just keep it stored in a cool, dark spot and your peanut butter will be just fine.

15) HONEY
Refrigeration will cause the luscious honey to harden. That's why you should be storing it at room temperature and out of direct sunlight.

16) BERRIES
Fresh berries already have a short shelf life, so leave them out of the fridge and eat them within a day or two of purchasing.

17) JAM
Due to the high amount of preservatives in jams and jellies, it is acceptable to store without refrigeration, even after opening.

18) STONE FRUITS
Stone fruits such as peach, cherry and plum aren't exactly good friends with the fridge, therefore it's best to keep them aside in the kitchen until they're ripe, and ready to eat.

19) GARLIC
Refrigeration reduces the flavor of garlic and affects its lifespan as well. The refrigerated environment can actually cause mold to develop. Store garlic in a paper bag in a cool, dark spot.

20) SPICES
Ground spices need no refrigeration whatsoever.

21) NUTS & DRIED FRUITS
There's no need to refrigerate them. Nuts will be fine stored in a cool, dark spot.

22) WINTER SQUASHES
Butternut squash, acorn squash, spaghetti squash, delicata and pumpkins are just some of the many varieties of winter squash we find in the market. These vitamin A and C rich veggies do best when stored at room temperature. On top of that, squash can last for about a month or longer out of the fridge.

23) PACKED TUNA
You might not be sure, but that tuna has been sealed, just like in a can, so it's more than fine stored at room temperature.

24) PEPPER
Whether red, green, yellow, and even chili peppers, they're going to be just fine without any refrigeration. Store them in a paper bag in a cool space.

6 Investing Lessons From The Richest Man In The World- Warren Buffett

buffet-quoteWarren Buffet, also known as the oracle of Omaha, is no stranger to the world of investing. There’s a lot to learn from the most successful (and did we also mention, the richest) man in the world of investing.
Here are six lessons from Warren Buffett that you can use to invest better.
#1: “If you buy things you don’t need, you will soon sell things you need.”
You can make more money not only by investing or taking up a second job, but also by resisting the temptation to go out and just splurge. As the saying goes – a penny saved is a penny earned.
Key Takeaway: To be a successful investor, you need to use due diligence. Spending wisely is not about being miserly, but about being smart. Invest in assets that give you good returns over the long term- one that helps you secure your financial future.
#2: “Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.”
Most of us know this- the money we pay for something and the value we get out of it, most of the time, does not have a correlation. You could possibly buy a posh apartment for 1 crore rupees. But staying in the apartment does not guarantee a high quality of life- does it?
When it comes to investing, especially the stock markets, the price of a stock is mostly governed by market sentiments and not necessarily by the profitability or value of the company itself. Warren buffet suggests to buy stocks when the price you have to pay for the stock is less than the intrinsic value of it. He says, “Whether we’re talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down.”
Key takeaway: Instead of trying to time the market and extract every rupee profit you can possibly get out of your investment, invest in assets that will generate inflation-beating long term returns and hold on it for a long time (In buffet terms, forever).
#3: “It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price.”
Warren Buffet recommends investing in undervalued stock with great potential and holding on to them forever. In-line with this philosophy (which undoubtedly worked so well, and still continues to work), buying shares of a wonderful company at a fair price is much better than buying a mediocre company at a cheap/bargain price.
Buffet notes that over the long term, mediocre companies gives much lesser returns compared to wonderful companies, so much so that the bargain price for which you bought the mediocre company stock does not seem like a bargain anymore.
Key takeaway: Don’t try and time the market or buy into NFO mutual funds because the NAV is low. Invest whenever you have the money and hold it for as long as possible.
#4: Be loss-averse
Majority of investor’s measure performance solely based on return. Buffett advices that you should not strive to make every dollar a potential profit which involves too much risk. Instead you should be loss-averse. Preserving your capital should be your top goal. By avoiding losses you’ll naturally be inclined towards investments with assured returns.
As Warren Buffet puts it, “Rule #1, never lose money. Rule #2, never forget Rule #1.”
The takeaway: While Buffet talks about safety of capital, he’s referring to stock investing where you don’t become greedy and go after too-good-to-be-true stocks. Instead, you focus on stocks that are undervalued and are of companies that you understand and has long-term potential.
Many investors misunderstand this as a recommendation for investing only in Bank FDs or equivalent assets which are mostly considered safe. Investing in Bank FDs is almost always guaranteed to be a losing proposition over the long term since after-tax, the returns you get annualized are below inflation rate.
#5: Be tax savvy
Like all billionaires, Buffett too is tax savvy.
Be knowledgeable about tax laws and use them to your advantage. Before you invest, make sure you understand the tax implications of your investment.
For e.g. while investing in Bank FDs might give you 9% returns, the interest is actually taxable as per your tax-bracket. The real return, if you are in the 30% tax-bracket, will fall to just a little above 6%. Now, that’s below inflation rate and you are effectively losing money the longer you invest in it.
The takeaway: Understand the tax implications of your investment fully before making a choice.
#6: Limit what you borrow
More is not always good- case in point, loans and credit card debt.
With daily offers from ecommerce companies, it might be tempting to buy that latest mobile phone on an EM. Considering the fact that the phone you bought for EMI (plus the processing fee which is in-directly the interest you pay for the EMI facility), and it loses its value over time (most cases, the moment you buy it), it is best if you limit your borrowing.
The takeaway: Borrow only when it’s absolutely necessary. When borrowing, make sure you understand all the fees associated with it. Sometimes, the real cost of bowing money will be hidden as miscellaneous charges like processing fee.

10 Ways To Tell If Someone Is Lying

By Rinkesh Kukreja of LifeHack|  Telling lies is a very bad habit that many people have fallen prey to. People often lie to escape from speaking the truth and view it as something that is important for survival. Unfortunately, most humans aren’t very good at detecting lies; however, there are a few simple things you can do to determine whether or not a person is lying.  Just asking the right questions and observing a person’s body movements can reveal the truth.
Below are a few techniques that can help you avoid being a victim of deceit:

1. Look for Facial Expressions

The face is often the first place that reflects a person’s true personality. When a person is happy or sad, it shows on his entire face. While telling lies, micro-expressions appear for a fraction of a second and reveal the person’s true character.

2. Prolonged Eye Contact

A person who is lying usually avoids eye contact or holds prolonged eye contact to convince the other person to trust him. He will do the job well to assure you that what you think you hear is the truth and nothing else.

3. Notice Body Language

A person who is lying usually uses his hand to touch his nose, comb his hair, pull up his socks, wipe away sweat, tug on his clothes or rub his lips. Another thing to watch out for is that a liar does not typically sit up straight while telling the lie. He might feel a bit uncomfortable sitting in the same position and might even fidget or fuss for no reason.

4. Establish the Baseline

Before looking for particular clues to catch a liar, it is important to set a baseline. A baseline reveals how a person behaves in normal circumstances. This can be done by asking some simple and basic questions to which you already know the answers. People normally answer these questions truthfully, and you can note the behavior and mood to establish the baseline.

5. Notice the Pause

When a liar is making up a story to cover the truth, you may notice him taking a long pause so that he can create a sequence of events. This only happens when he is asked a question for which he didn’t prepare an answer beforehand. A liar usually makes up the events as he talks.

6. Check for Sweating

If you’ve seen some detective shows then you might have noticed that people sweat more when they lie. Sweating occurs in stressful situations and when you lie, it is very stressful. It is one of the indicators along a group of other signs which indicates that there is something fishy going on.

7. Inconsistencies in the Story

Even if you have the slightest doubt that the other person is taking you for a ride, ask him to repeat the story after discussing a couple of things in between. If the person is lying, he might add a few details or remove couple of things that were previously mentioned. Any deviations in the story could indicate that the person is lying.

8. Proclaims Honesty Repeatedly

A liar often repeats phrases to emphasize the validity of his statements. Frequently used phrases like “to be honest”, “believe me”, and “to tell the truth” are often clear-cut indications that there is something wrong in the story. Most people don’t use these statements so often.

9. Excessive Lip-Licking

Excessive lip-licking is a common sign of dishonesty. When a person lies, it puts a lot of stress on his body, which can result in repetitive physical behaviors.

10. Changes in Voice or Tone

Closely observe the voice or tone of the person you think is lying. Any changes in voice (i.e. slower or faster-than-normal speech patterns) indicate dishonesty. Stammering or stuttering may also point to a lie.

black cumin

The healing power of black cumin (Nigella Sativa).

Nigella Sativa is a medicinal spice that appears to be active in seasoning food products. It has a potent bioactive known as thymoquinone which shows promise in treating epilepsy, allergies, and boosting the immune system.
This seed originally comes from Egypt. They grow in a small pod and to get them out, water must be poured over it. Also referred to as black caraway and Roma coriander, these little seeds pack a powerful punch, offering protection against MRSA and cancer. As researchers uncover more and more worthwhile uses of this seed, we are learning just how much potential can be found in a natural substance.

Health Benefits

Cure for Diabetes – Two grams of black seed a day resulted in reduced fasting glucose, decreased insulin resistance, increased beta-cell function, and reduced glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in human subjects.
Helicobacter Pylori Infection – Black seeds possess clinically useful anti-H. pylori activity, comparable to triple eradication therapy.
Epilepsy – Black seeds were traditionally known to have anticonvulsive properties. A 2007 study with epileptic children, whose condition was refractory to conventional drug treatment, found that a water extract significantly reduced seizure activity.
High Blood pressure – The daily use of 100 and 200 mg of black seed extract, twice daily, for 2 months, was found to have a blood pressure-lowering effect in patients with mild hypertension.
Asthma – Thymoquinone, one of the main active constituents is superior to the drug fluticasone in an animal model of asthma. Another study in human subjects found that boiled water extracts of black seed have relatively potent anti-asthmatic effect on asthmatic airways.
Sore throat – Research indicates that black seed is an effective treatment for acute tonsillopharyngitis with tonsil or throat tissue inflammation. Basically, it can relieve viral sore throats.
Post-Surgical Scar Prevention – Tested on areas of post-operative trauma, Nigella sativa was found to protect peritoneal surfaces from scarring or adhesion formation.
Psoriasis – Applied topically to psoriasis inflammation, black seed was able to increase epidermal thickness and soothe eruptions.
Parkinson’s Disease – An extract of thymoquinone, from black seed, was shown to protect neurons from toxicity associated with Parkinson’s disease and dementia in a study published in Neuroscience Letters.
The black cumin is a powerful healing agent which has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. EHC lists out more health benefits of this power healing substance.
The black seed helps against all types of cold ailments and helps introduce the effectiveingredients of cold medications to the areas affected by hot and dry ailments, as it helps the body absorb the medicine quickly when taken in small dosages.
Black seed is hot and dry in the third degree, eliminates, flatulence, extracts the helminthes (worm), relieves leprosy and phlegm fevers, opens clogs, decomposes accumulating gas and excess moisture in the stomach.
When it is ground, blended with honey and drunk with some warm water, it will dissolve the stones that appear in the kidney and the prostate and it is also diuretic.
It increases the flow during menstruation and the production of milk.

Black seeds oil helps against snakebites, hemorrhoids and spots. When around 25 grams of it is drunk with water, it will help against gasping and hard breathing.
When the black seeds are cooked in vinegar and rinse mouth with it, it will relieve toothache resulting from sensitivity to cold. When inhaled, it will help against water that accumulates in the eye. When it is used in a bandage while blended with vinegar, it heals spots and exposed skin ulcers and decomposes the acute mucus tumors and also hard tumors.
When the black seeds are crushed in vinegar and laid on leprous skin, the skin affected by black pigmentation and on the head that is affected by dandruff, it helps relieve these aliments.
Black seed oil is touted as a natural remedy for the following health conditions like allergies, asthma, bronchitis, colds, diabetes, flu, headaches, high blood pressure, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Safety Warning

Due to lack of extensive research, little is known about the safety of long-term use of black seed oil when used in amounts higher than normally found in food. However, there is some evidence that applying black seed oil directly to the skin may cause allergic reactions (such as a rash) in some individuals.
It is important to note that self-treating a chronic condition with black seed oil and avoiding or delaying standard care may have serious consequences. If you are considering the use of black seed oil in treatment of chronic conditions such as diabetes, make sure to consult your docto
