Naxal leader's wife, top functionary arrested

MUMBAI: Two women, including the wife of a top Naxal leader and the secretary of the Maharashtra Central Committee, were arrested from Talaopali area in Thane on Tuesday by the anti-terrorism squad (ATS).
Angela Sontakke, who goes by several aliases, is the wife of a senior Naxal leader Milind Teltumde who was arrested along with Sushma Ramteke alias Shraddah Gurav alias Arti. The police have recovered a large quantity of Naxal literature and cash amounting to Rs 4.55 lakh.
According to the police, Angela could be a "key player" in several incidents in which policemen have been killed in Gadchiroli and other areas in the state. "We received a tip-off that Angela was likely to come to Thane. A team led by officers Jitendra Agarkar and Shailash Gaikwad laid a trap and caught her. She revealed the whereabouts of Sushma during interrogation," said ATS chief Rakesh Maria.
Both accused have been booked under the Unlawful Activities and Prevention Act (UAPA) and remanded in
police custody.
Maria added, "Angela has around 20 cases against her in the state. She is a key member of the core group which distributes finance among the Naxalites and plans operations against policemen. Angela and Sushma would move in urban areas to procure equipment like cameras, organize and recruit tribals. They facilitate storage and distribution of weapons and other electronic gadgets."
Angela is also a member of the newly-formed 'golden corridor committee' whose purpose is to spread the ideology in the rural areas, the police said. "Angela is highly educated and has degrees like MSc (zoology), BEd, MA (sociology) and BSc (microbiology)." said deputy commissioner of police Pradeep Sawant.
The police said, Sushma was employed with a private firm in Pune.
