Strong undersea earthquake rattles eastern Indonesia; no tsunami or initial damage

JAKARTA, Indonesia - A magnitude 6.1 earthquake has hit off Indonesia's eastern coast, but there are no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning has been issued.
Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency says Friday's earthquake was centred some 47 miles (75 kilometres) southwest of Gorontalo, a provincial town in northern Sulawesi. It hit at a depth of 22 miles (35 kilometres).
Indonesia is prone seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
