KHYBER AGENCY - Thirty-two militants of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed in a clash with pro-government volunteers of Ansarul Islam during a gunfight in Maidan area of tehsil Bara, sub-division of Khyber, officials said on Saturday.
Assistant political agent Nasir Khan said that clash started when Taliban militants stormed into a base of AI in the wee hours of Friday and capture the base. The AI fighters retaliated to regain the base and both groups targeted each other with heavy artillery.
AI spokesperson Sadaat said the TTP militants had been targeting masses in the area and therefore the AI rose to root them out.
Twenty-one volunteers of AI were killed in the standoff while 32 TTP militants were killed and three were captured, he added.
Maidan, Tirah valley is located on the West, 70 kilometres away from Bara and militant groups are engaged in armed clashes to get hold of the territory.
Separately, three of a family were killed in a mortar strike on Saturday in Bagh, Tirah Koki khel area of tehsil Jamrud, officials said.
According to officials, a stray mortar shell fired by unknown location landed on the house of Anar Baig, killing him, his wife and son.
In another incident, a man was killed in a blast in Malagori Khugakhel area of tehsil Landi Kotal when he was sitting outside his house.
