In the five days to Sunday December 19, 72 people were arrested and charged with 85 fraud and theft offences, and subsequently more than $17,000 worth of property was recovered, police say.
Among the offenders nabbed during Operation Lightfingers was a woman in the Pitt Street Mall who took a wallet and mobile phone from another woman's handbag.
At Bondi Junction, a man tried to use a fake credit card and identification to buy a mobile phone, with police later finding he had attempted the same scam at other outlets.
Theft offences are prevalent during the festive season, with opportunistic crimes proving popular, Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch said in a statement on Monday.
"We would advise people to keep their bags and other valuables secured while they shop," he said.
"Remember, if you sit down for a coffee not to put your bags out of sight at your feet as they can be easily stolen by thieves."
