Bombers in guise of cops attack govt office in Pak, kill 40
GHALANAI ( Pakistan): At least 40 people were killed and 60 injured, as two suicide bombers disguised as policemen attacked a government office at Ghalanai in Pakistan's restive tribal northwest on Monday.
The attackers struck as officials were preparing to meet volunteers of a militia created to fight the Taliban."The toll could rise, as 25 of the injured are in a critical condition,"said an official. He said the bombers were on foot. Around 140 people were in the building when attackers struck.
Local Taliban commander Omer Khalid claimed responsibility for the attack. "The attackers were our Fidayeen . We targeted the members of the peace committee as they worked for the government . Anyone involved in such activities will meet the same fate,"he said. The attack came hours after local corps commander Lt Gen Asif Yasin Malik claimed the army had cleared 85% of volatile tribal belt of the Taliban.
