80-year-old died months ago, daughter lived with her body

NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old mentally challenged woman had been staying in her south Delhi house with the body of her octogenarian mother for a few months, not realizing that she was dead. The decomposed body of Vinodini Gupta (80) was discovered from her ground-floor residence in D-block, Saket on Saturday. Gupta's daughter, Shalini Mehra, is divorced from Ronesh Mehra, who is the grandson of Delhi Police's first inspector general, D W Mehra.
The body was discovered only when a DJB employee, Rajendra Bhadana, went to Gupta's residence to check the water meter. Suspecting something was amiss, Bhadana informed Gupta's first-floor neighbour, K L Bhatia, who, in turn, informed police. When the police team reached the house there was no response at the door. The cops had to then break open the door. There was a foul smell emanating from one of the rooms. The woman sitting in the room was identified as Shalini, the deceased's daughter and a British national.

Speaking to TOI, Shalini said, "This is not my mother's body. One of the builders who lives in Golf Links had dumped this body in our house. My mother died in her sleep last year and was cremated.''

According to police, they had ascertained that the decomposed body found on the bed was of Shalini's mother. "We asked Shalini about it but she did not speak. She did not tell anything. She appears to be mentally challenged. She did not interact with anyone and never came out of the house. No relative ever visited them in all these months,'' said a senior police officer. Shalini's ex-husband Ronesh Mehra told Times City, "I had no relations with the family. I was once married into that family.''

According to the officers who entered the four-bedroom house, bones and flesh were lying around. "The body was not in full. It has badly decomposed. We collected the body parts which have been sent to AIIMS for postmortem. The deceased was also found wearing socks. It appears she died a few months ago,'' said DCP (south) HGS Dhaliwal. Curiously, none of the neighbours could discover this in such a long time. Police said they were awaiting the postmortem report to ascertain the time and cause of death.

The cops informed Shalini's 21-year-old daughter, Rihana Mehra, who is pursuing MBBS from Bangalore. Rihana then came to Delhi to claim her grandmother's body. Initially, the husband of the deceased, Purshottam Lal Gupta, was settled in England where he had a family business. The couple came back to India in 1970s and bought a house in Saket. They later sold the first and second floors to a builder and kept the ground and lower-ground floors for themselves.

Vice-president of Saket RWA, Bansilal, said, "The Guptas had two daughters and the family was well-off. P L Gupta had come back to India from England in 1970s and died in 2000. Though they had been living here for over 20 years, they kept to themselves and did not interact with anyone in the locality.'' Police said the eldest daughter stays in Hauz Khas.
