Corruption ---Our National Weakness.

Price-tagged medical jobs

BANGALORE: How much does it cost, meaning the bribe, to get a job at a government hospital in the state?

According to a complaint filed with Hassan Town police station, it's Rs 1.25 lakh for a technician's post, Rs 1.5 lakh for a chemist's post, Rs 1.2 lakh for a D group employee's post, Rs 1.5 lakh for a record keeper's post, and Rs 1.8 lakh for a storekeeper's job.

On Wednesday, one such complainant S S Prabhakar named six persons, including medical education minister Ramachandra Gowda's personal assistant Virupaksha, as accused. They are __ Virupaksha and Anantha, Ashwatha, Hemanth Kumar, Ravi Kumar and Girish, all dismissed employees of theHassan Government Medical College.

On August 26, chief minister B S Yeddyurappa cancelled the appointment of 387 staff, all C and D group employees, in Mysore and Hassan medical colleges, following a report citing irregularities in appointments. Following this, the relieved recruits are staging a dharna at Hassan.

Thanks to the protests and the court's direction, the government has initiated an inquiry by additional chief secretary Abhijit Das Gupta in to the alleged scam. A decision is likely by Monday.

Meanwhile, it is said that efforts are being made to prove that there was no corruption in the appointment process. In Bangalore, on Thursday, JD(S) leader H D Revanna, who hails from Hassan district, produced documents and paraded some victims as proof to the corruption in the recruitments and the efforts being made to revoke the cancellation of appointments.

Krishnaiah Shetty, who was a temporary recruit at the college, said: "I paid Rs 2.5 lakh to executive officer L Jayaram as bribe. I didn't get the job and hence asked him to pay me back. He paid me back Rs 1.5 lakh in cash." Another person Guruprasad said he was asked a bribe of Rs 1.2 lakh.

The sacked employees are now giving an affidavit stating that they had not paid any bribe. Revanna displayed one such affidavit and said it had been done with a vested interest. Revanna alleged that Ramachandra Gowda's son, Sapthagiri Gowda, was involved in the scam, but police had omitted his name from the FIR. Demanding a judicial probe into the alleged scam, he urged the CM to sack the medical education minister.

Rampant corruption in recruitment in medical colleges

BANGALORE September 3, 2010: There seems to be no end to corruption in Karnataka. Despite the Karnataka Lokayukta’s efforts, rampant corruption has prevailed at all levels of the state administration run by the BJP. The latest incident of corruption is in the recruitment of staff in the Hassan Medical College.

The JD (S) leader H D Revanna on Thursday provided a CD containing recordings of discussion with officials seeking bribe. He alleged that Gangadhar, director of the college Hassan medical college, his personal assistant (PA) and PA of the Minister and several other officials were involved in the job scam.

He demanded suspension of directors of both colleges till the completion of the inquiry. He also demanded resignation of Medical Education Minister Ramachandra Gowda for his alleged involvement in the job scandal.
The Janata Dal (Secular) demanded the probe by former Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court and Rajya Sabha member Rama Jois into alleged irregularities in the recruitment staff in Mysore Medical College and Research Institute and the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences.

He also demanded a probe into recruitment of candidates to nab the culprits behind the job scam in both colleges.
Candidates, who refused to pay bribe, told the media Ananth, PA of the director of Hassan medical college and few others approached them and sought bribe for selection of jobs.
While a few refused to pay bribe, others paid Rs three to Rs five lakhs for selection of their candidature for the posts. Veerupaksha, personal assistant of the Minister was also involved in the recruitment scandal, Mr Revanna alleged.

Nearly 400 employees recently recruited by the Hassan and Mysore medical colleges have virtually been sacked by the Government after they reported to work following serious anomalies in the recruitment procedure.  The recruits have since commenced an indefinite dharna in Hassan and Mysore.
