=======================================================================FRIDLEY, Minn. -- An elderly Fridley man was sexually assaulted Sunday night after someone entered his home.
"I would classify it as a horrific crime for anybody to have to endure," said Lt. Mike Monsrud with the Fridley Police Department.
Police say the man entered the home through an unlocked patio door. The man, in his eighties, was home alone when the suspect confronted him.
"He tried to pick up the phone to call 911, the phone was wrestled away from him. He tried to go into the kitchen to get a knife to defend himself and the suspect took control of him and threw him to the ground. The suspect picked him up and directed him to another portion of the house where the sexual asault occurred," said Lt. Paul Sommer with the Anoka County Sheriff's Department.
It's the third similar incident in the last month in the neighborhood. Fridley police say in all three cases the suspect has entered the home through an unlocked door. All three victims were elderly, but up until Sunday, no on had been hurt.
"People waking up in their homes with a suspect standing in their home near where thy were sleeping," said Lt. Monsrud.
Officers have put out crime alerts and gone door to door to notify the people in the four-square-block area, but even with the extra police attention, people are scared.
"I have two small kids, there's an elementary school a couple blocks away and this is just wrong. We need to catch this person and get it to stop," said Jill Newbauer who lives in the neighborhood.
"Five years ago we didn't have to be locking every door that you had," said Joyce Johnson, a resident in the neighborhood for 52 years.
The description of the suspect in all three cases has been similar but very vague. All police know at this point is that it is a black male, between the ages of 20 and 25, with a thin build.
Anyone with information is asked to call Fridley Police or the Anoka County Sheriff's Department.
