Evils of India --- Dowry Harassment

Pregnant woman reportedly set on fire by in-laws

NEW DELHI: A nine-month- pregnant woman was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws in east Delhi late on Wednesday evening.

The woman, married for the past one-and-a-half years, survived and so did the baby, who was taken out of her womb. Though the baby is premature, doctors are hoping that the child will survive the ordeal. "We are taking all steps to ensure that mother and child recover," said doctors.

The accused, including the woman's husband Rohit Chopra (26)— who is employed in a private firm, is absconding. The incident was reported around 8.30 pm from the Anarkali Garden near Mandawali.

According to the police, 24-year-old Anita was a resident of A-31 Anarkali Garden. ''On Wednesday, the woman had gone to meet her parents who stay nearby in the same locality. As evening approached, her husband came to pick her up. It was during this time that Manohar Lal Chopra, Rohit's father, called up and asked her to return home immediately. When she returned after sometime, her in-laws, including mother-in-law Vimla and brother-in-law, beat her up and then poured petrol on her.

The woman managed to call her family members who rushed to rescue her. As her in-laws escaped, the woman was rushed to a local nursing home near Vivek Vihar.

Meanwhile, the police said that they are investigating the case. "We are looking into the allegations closely. We have recorded the woman's statements and the case has also being referred to the Crime Against Women Cell. We will lodge a case accordingly,'' said an investigating officer.

The officer added that the charges of dowry harassment had been received from the victim.
