4 deaths in Kashmir on eve of all-party visit; toll mounts to 105

A day before an all-party delegation from New Delhi was to visit Kashmir on Monday to assess the situation in the crisis-ridden Valley, four more persons died following action by security forces on angry protestors. The deaths brought the number of civilians killed on the 101st day of the current  phase of unrest in the Valley since June 11 to a staggering 105 — more than one death every day.

Three persons injured in recent clashes between protestors and security forces succumbed to their injuries early on Sunday morning and a 19-year-old girl died later in the day after being fired upon by security forces in Sopore district, 55 km from Srinagar.

"A mob pelted stones on security forces in Nathipora, Bomai. In our attempts to bring the situation under control, one girl was injured,” said a police spokesperson.

The police did not confirm the death but sources in a Srinagar hospital said that the girl — identified as Mubeena Wani, a resident of Nathipora — had died of bullet injuries.

With the mood in the Valley remaining grim, the 39-member all-party delegation led by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram seems to have a difficult task on its hands.

The delegation will meet various parties and people’s forums in Srinagar on Monday and got to Jammu the next day to get a feel of the mood in that region. (the hindustan times)
