Postal department to use handhelds in rural areas

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today approved the IT Modernization Project – Phase-II proposal of the Department of Posts. The decision is to computerize all the departmental and grameen dak sevak (GDS) posts offices in the country.

Handheld devices will be provided to all the Grameen Dak Sevak (GDS) Post Offices in the rural areas and necessary software application developed. Using these devices dak sevak will be able to perform the duty of a banking correspondent, information provider, as well as his core job of a postman.

Software Integration solutions will be developed for mail operations enabling tracking solutions for all registered and Speed Post articles.
Government has earmarked Rs 1877.20 crore for the deployment of the ICT network. The Project will be implemented over a three year period covering 2010-13.

Government is also mulling to give banking license to India Post. The postal department already works as a quasi bank, providing a host of savings products, postal life insurance, pension payments and money transfer services through its 1.55 lakh branches, more than any other bank.

This move can provide a big boost to mobile banking and help in popularising ICT enabled services in rural India, thereby helping in creating a new market for the ICT services in rural India.
