THE quick actions of a Nerang man saved the lives of two young women who were trapped in their sinking car after it ploughed into his swimming pool.
Adrian Sclater was dozing on his couch when he heard the almighty crash, followed by a splash, about 11.30pm on Saturday, reports the Gold Coast Bulletin.
''I ran outside, the girl in the back was freaking out and screaming 'We're sinking!','' said Mr Sclater.
''I thought the car was already on the bottom but then I noticed it was still going down.''

The electric windows failed once the car hit the water but the driver's window was down a couple of centimetres.
Mr Sclater and a neighbour managed to pull the window outward from the frame before snapping it to free the panicked women.

''I had to smash the drivers' side window to pull them out.

''It was just lucky the car didn't roll upside down and the front of the car landed in the shallow end.

''It could have been a far more serious outcome.''

His wife Beth Yates-Sclater said it sounded ''like the sky had fallen' as the car left The Domain (roadway), smashed through their wooden fence and glass pool fence before landing in the water.

''When I opened the door water was gushing off the roof - that's how big the splash was, it flooded the lower level of our house.

''The girl in the back started screaming, she was really panicking.

''They were stuck and couldn't get out.

''I think it took about 10 minutes to get them out - it seemed like forever.''

Mrs Yates-Sclater wrapped the startled women in blankets and tried to calm them before emergency crews arrived.

Both women, 28 and 23, were taken to Gold Coast Hospital with minor injuries.

  • PRIME Minister Julia Gillard's de facto stepdaughter, Staci Child, says her revealing photo shoot for a men's magazine was "a very Australian thing to do".
Ms Child, 31, posed in a patriotic bikini with an Australian flag and a ballot box for Zoo Weekly.
The daughter of Ms Gillard's partner, Tim Mathieson, flaunted her tattoos and toned body but stopped short of revealing all in the saucy photo shoot.
The tattooed, New York-based stylist said her dad had given the pictures the thumbs up.
"When I showed him the photos, he loved them," she said.
"I think Julia will think it's a very Australian thing to do."
Ms Child was raised by her mum in Shepparton, Victoria, but remains close to her father.
She told the magazine she speaks to him every day but was unclear about his current job.
"He was a hairdresser, but I think he does real estate now. Or he's the men's health ambassador for Australia," she said.
"I'm not certain. Maybe he's not doing much at all . . . I'm sure he won't just be sitting at home drinking The Lodge dry."
Ms Child flew from New York for the photo shoot last week.
However, not everyone is thrilled with the finished product.
RSL State President David McLachlan said the Australian flag should be respected.
"Recognising generational change in opinions, there would be many in the community, including me, that see the use of the flag in this way as most inappropriate," he said.
Australians for Constitutional Monarchy spokesman Prof David Flint has also expressed reservations.
"It may be somewhat undignified and not what you would have done but then again you've got to allow young people a certain degree of liberty in these sort of things," he said.
"Apart from questions of good taste or not, that's not the issue. The issue is that she obviously likes the flag and that's a good thing."
