Brit officer plans to tweet from Afghan frontline

London: A senior British Army officer says he plans to keep the world updated on life in war-torn Afghanistan through social networking site Twitter. 

Lieutenant Colonel Dougie Graham, commanding officer of the Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, said that he plans to tweet during their six-month tour. 

Though military tactics will still remain confidential, Graham said there will be plenty of material to keep the public interested. 


"I would like to be able to give people a feel for the reality because it's not all fighting, it's not all bombs and bullets," he was quoted as saying by the Daily Telegraph. 

"What we're trying to do is draw everything together so that we can get messages of support to the men, as well as updates of what the battalion's been doing back home." 

Saying that he was unaware of another commander previously using Twitter, Graham said he was not "reinventing the wheel". 

Insisting that he is a pragmatist, the commander said that tweeting is the obvious thing to do as most of his friends communicate via social networking sites such as Twitter, MySpace and Facebook. 

Lt Col Graham is consulting the Ministry of Defence about the possible content of his tweets. 

He is leading around 450 soldiers, who will soon leave for Lashkar Gah, the capital of the Helmand Province.
