UP temple row that was solved in hours

Fri, Sep 17

As the administration remains apprehensive about a possible fallout of the September 24 verdict, it can take heart from Maharajganj in UP. In the Dhuswa Kala village, Hindus and Muslims defused a potentially violent situation by dividing a portion of land in two parts, with a tomb and a temple to be housed in either.

While digging was on for restoration for an old tomb on gram panchayat land on Tuesday, labourers stumbled on a shivling and a statue of Nandi, said District Magistrate Vinay Kumar Srivastava. Hindus started streaming in to offer prayers, and fearing trouble, officials rushed to the village.

However, within hours, members of both communities reached a solution: the land would be divided in two equal parts, one would retain the tomb and the other would house the temple where the idols would be placed. A wall would divide the two parts.

Srivastava said members of both communities have signed an agreement to this effect and got it registered.
Says gram pradhan Zameel Ahmed: "Nobody made it an issue, nor sought intervention of the police. Pradip Mishra of the village represented his community while I represented the Muslims, and we settled the matter."
The measurement of land was done on Tuesday night and it was divided. "The work for construction of the wall is going on," says Ahmed. "When it is completed, we will get a platform constructed where the statues will be installed with all rituals."
