AAAELROY, Wis. -- Some residents think something strange is lurking in the woods of Juneau County, and one man has proof of the mysterious creature.

On his drives throughout the county, Juneau County highway worker Jeff Potter said he comes across countless dead wildlife. But he said he's never come across anything quite like the creature he found dead along Highway 71 in the city of Elroy on Monday morning.

"It's completely hairless -- almost like leather," Potter said. "It has a canine-like head and a fox- or dog-type head. The rear legs are coon-like. The tail is almost like an opossum."

Potter, who is an avid hunter and outdoorsman, was left speechless. And he's not alone.

"At first, I just thought it was a small piglet," said Chuck Huschka, who saw the creature alive, running across his property in May. He said he only got a quick look before the mystery critter bolted.

"I have no idea what it is," Huschka said. "I've never seen anything like it in my life."

Some said they believe it's a chupacabra, a legendary creature first reported in Mexico and Puerto Rico. Two people in the U.S., earlier this week, said they think they also stumbled across a chupacabra -- including a teen in Texas who said he shot and killed it.

Experts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are taking a more scientific approach. After examining the pictures, they said it's likely a severely manged fox or raccoon.

But Potter said he doesn't buy that explanation.

"It just doesn't have the body features of a coon -- the ears are way too big," he said.

It's why Potter is preserving the animal in his freezer, until experts can do testing. But as far as he's concerned, he's come across something pretty big.

"It's an oddity. It's something very different," Potter said.

Potter said he's waiting to hear back from a UW researcher, so they can look at it and determine what exactly it is. He said, though, that he eventually wants the animal back. He has plans to mount it and use it as a conversation piece at his home.
