More than 2,800 homeless kids were treated to a holiday celebration like no other yesterday as they received a seven-course meal and personalized gifts at the annual “Christmas in the City” bash at the Boston Convention Center.

The tradition, now in its 22nd year, featured an appearance by Santa Claus, overseeing toy distribution by his elves. A jolly Gov. Deval Patrick also put in an appearance. The kids and their parents walked a red carpet into the winter wonderland, which featured live stage performances, magicians and pony rides.

Christmas in the City is a 100 percent volunteer organization. Public donations have helped bring happiness to more than 60,500 kids over the years.

“The number of families in shelters grows each year, and this year is no exception,” said event co-founder Jake Kennedy in a statement. “We really look to the Boston community and our volunteers to help us gather all the things that are needed to give each and every child a wonderful experience.”
