Strong earthquake rocks eastern Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck off the Molucca islands in eastern Indonesia on Monday, but there were no reports of damage, authorities said.

The quake occurred at 11:05 am (04:05 GMT) with an epicentre 69 kilometres south-west of Labuha city, at a depth of 10 kilometres, said the Meteorology, Geophysics and Climatology Agency.

There was no tsunami alert.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
