Top police official killed in south Russia

Moscow: A top police official involved in combat against extremists was killed on Sunday by unidentified assailants in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia's volatile Caucasus region of Daghestan, reports said.

Gapal Gadzhiyev, the head of anti-extremism department of North Caucasus Federal District covering southern militancy -affected regions including Chechnya, was shot dead in his Toyota Avensis while on his way to work, a news agency reported. 
Various militant groups influenced by the idea of an Islamic Emirate in the Caucasus region frequently attack law enforcement officers, although Moscow has withdrawn a decade long anti-terror regime in Chechnya.

A bomb placed under a car yesterday went off in the Makhachkala, injuring a police officer who was hospitalised with shrapnel wounds. 

On Thursday, a suicide bomber on a car blew himself up at a market in Vladikavkaz, the capital of Republic of North Ossetia, killing 18 and injuring more than 160. 

Last Sunday, a military camp was attacked by a suicide bomber who rammed explosives laden car to a gate in Daghestan's Buinaksk killing five service men and injuring 35 soldiers. 
Notorious warlord Doku Umarov has vowed to shift war against Russia to its non-Muslim areas in a video message posted by the rebel kavkazcentre website.

Two militants and the head of the local administration  killed
PYATIGORSK, September 12 (RIA Novosti)
Two militants and the head of the local administration were killed on Sunday during a special operation carried out by Russian security forces in the southern republic of Dagestan, local police said.
"During a raid in the village of Komsomolskoye two militants were killed. The head of local administration was also killed. The special operation is continuing," the duty officer in the Kizilyurt District said.
He did not identify the dead militants and was unable to say if there were any other militants inside the house.
An antiterrorism official said earlier that Shahban Aliyev, wanted as a member of a militant group, was inside the building.
Clashes between security forces and armed groups are common in Russia's North Caucasus republics, in particular Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, where police and government officials are often targeted by militants.
Earlier in the day in Dagestan's capital, Makhachkala, at least eight militants were killed in a counterterrorist operation.
Also on Sunday in Makhachkala, the head of an international department for the fight against extremism in Russia's North Caucasus Federal District was shot dead as he drove to work.

Russian security forces kill 8 militants in Dagestan

MOSCOW, September 12 (RIA Novosti)

Eight militants, including one woman, have been killed in an ongoing security operation in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, the National Antiterrorism Committee said on Sunday.
A statement said the operation in Dagestan's capital of Makhachkala had lasted for 19 hours and was continuing.
The committee said it was launched based on information gathered by the Federal Security Service and after help from locals a house used by militants had been surrounded.
"In response to an invitation to surrender the militants offered armed resistance," the committee statement said.
A source in the republic's security structures told RIA Novosti that "according to preliminary data, the number of militants killed may be more than eight."

Attacks on police and officials are common in Russia's North Caucasus republics, in particular Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia.
On Saturday, a bomb placed under a car went off in Dagestan's capital, injuring a police officer who was hospitalized with shrapnel wounds, while another officer was shot dead on Friday in the republic.
A week ago, Dagestan's Minister of National Policy, Foreign Relations and Information Bekmurza Bekmurzayev survived an apparent assassination attempt that killed his driver and injured two bodyguards.
