BANGALORE: The government has directed police to register criminal cases against four officials of the Beggars Relief Centre after over 30 beggars died due to their alleged negligence.
Social welfare minister A Narayanaswamy said joint director Krishne Gowda, Lakshminarasimhaiah (superintendent), Bhagyalakshmi (warden) and Hanumantharayappa (chief warden) would face criminal charges.

About 30 beggars died in a span of three days in the Centre, triggering criticism against its maintenance. The government also had to face public ire resulting in change of portfolio of the then social welfare minister D Sudhakar. "These officials have been suspended and the government has ordered a CID probe," Narayanaswamy said.

on Saturday, the department will launch a biometric management system to maintain personal record of inmates. The Centre presently houses 262 inmates.
