Karnataka govt safe: Court upholds disqualification of rebel BJP MLAs

Bangalore:  A windfall for the BJP government in Karnataka - the High Court has said that 11 BJP rebel MLAs who had withdrawn support to the government were correctly disqualified by the Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly.

They were not allowed to participate in two votes of confidence faced by Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa earlier this month.

Without them, the numbers tilted in favour of the BJP.  They had appealed against their disqualification in court.  Had today's verdict gone in their favour, the Yeddyurappa government could have skidded into a minority.

It currently has 106 MLAs supporting it, and 98 Opposition MLAs.

The rebel MLAs had charged the BJP government with corruption.

The MLAs are expected to appeal against the High Court verdict in the Supreme Court.
