Srinagar: Now with much effort the schools and colleges have finally reopened in Kashmir but the students have found that their problems are far from over.
The music is muted in the life of these students. They had been mostly confined to homes for the last four months because of the frequent curfews and separatists' strikes. Their schools and tuition classes had remained shut but now with exams round the corner their worries are mounting, as they are not prepared for the task.
Education in the Valley has taken a hit and many parents were forced to send their children outside Kashmir to make up for the lost time. However, for those who stayed back and returned to schools, a new set of worries is in store for them.
Many want exams to be postponed to make up for the lost time while some want that mass promotion should be given to all as a kind of compensation.
Under fire from his political opponents for plunging the state into chaos, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hit out at the Centre accusing it of undermining his initiative to restart the schools.
Omar said, “I wasn't happy when Centre included the reopening of schools in the eight-point plan … schools were running before and in fact state education minister and myself already had a meeting."
While the government wants schools to run smoothly, the dilemma for students in the Valley continues.
