BHUBANESWAR: The depression over the Bay of Bengal remained stationary on Thursday before making a late movement even as the State will be monitoring its progress for the next three days.
The Dussehra celebrations began during the day and by the evening, mild drizzle had begun, pouring cold water on the puja mood. The weather office said the system had not moved since Wednesday night. The last three monitoring done at 5.30 am, 8.30 am and 11.30 am on the day showed that the depression lay 430 km southeast of Gopalpur, off the Orissa coast.
"It is stuck but we expect it to move sooner than later," IMD Director S C Sahu said. It did move later in the day. The latest bulletin said the depression had moved westwards and was lying 350 km southeast of Gopalpur, covering a distance of 80 km.
In most cases, when the weather systems become stationary over the sea, they tend to pack in more strength. The state of the system, however, remained unknown at this stage. Besides, the cloud cover was scattered over a large area, across the coastal stretch of the State.
The weather office predicted that the system would develop into a deep depression and move in a west-northwesterly direction and cross the coast between Gopalpur and Paradip by Friday evening. The cyclone track forecast system showed that if the system maintains its direction and speed, it is likely to cross the coast to the south of Gopalpur. "We will have to wait and watch its behaviour over the next few hours," Sahu said.
Constantly monitoring the situation, the State Government put the administrations of Ganjam, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore districts on high alert.
The Special Relief Commissioner's Office stated that Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force, stationed at five places, has been asked to be in readiness to meet any exigencies with prediction of fairly widespread rains, and even heavy showers, over coastal Orissa and Andhra Pradesh during the next 48 hours.
