DEAUVILLE, France, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- As the cold war is over, Europe and Russia should become "friends" in face of common challenges, President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany said Monday after their bilateral meeting before arrival of Russian president. In the French resort Deauville on the Normandy coast, Sarkozy and Merkel held talks over economic governance acorss Europe before hosting President Dmitri Medvedev of Russia for dinner. Europe and Russia should build up trust and become friends, the two heads of state said at a joint press conference after their bilateral talk, stressing common challenges need to be coped with amid strengthened cooperation with Russia. The three leaders are expected to discuss over new European security framework, economic regulation as well as other important commonly concerned international issues, for example Afghanistan stability, Iran nuclear issue, and the peace process in Middle East. Among them, Russia's relation with western European countries and NATO would be core topics with the main exchange of ideas started in a two-hour meeting on Wednesday morning. A joint press conference is scheduled after the three-way get-together. The trio summit attracted an enormous amounts of attention due to its remarkable timing -- a month before the NATO allies meeting and France's taking over the presidency of G20 and G8, however, no concrete decisions, according to French presidency, will generate from the three-parties meeting. "We would like relations between Russia and Britain to develop comprehensively," said Lavrov when meeting with visiting Britain Foreign Secretary William Hague. Lavrov said Russia agreed to cooperate with Britain over the so-called Litvinenko case, which was believed to have strained bilateral relations. Russia refused to extradite a suspect in the poisoning of the former KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko, who underwent medical treatment in Britain.
