Vashi doctor confesses to ICU rape

Vishal Vanne, the doctor at Lotus Hospital in Vashi who is in the dock for of allegedly raping a 30-year-old patient, has a girlfriend.

She is pursuing a degree course in Physiotherapy in the US, according to police sources. However, the investigators are not sure whether she is aware of the incident or whether she would come down to meet him.

Vanne, a BAMS graduate, seems to have a clean track record. He was working as the resident medical officer (RMO) at the hospital for close to a year-and-a half. There have been no complaints against him, the police said. The hospital’s management has sacked Vanne after Saturday’s incident.

“He has confessed to the crime and we are awaiting forensic reports. His record till now, seems to be clean and  further investigations are on.

“We are also investigating whether he had administered sedatives to the victim to make her semi-conscious,” police inspector Rajkumar Chaphekar said.

On Tuesday, when DNA visited Vanne’s residence at sector 5 in Ghansoli, nobody was present in the house. The neighbours were not aware of their whereabouts.

“I don’t know much about the family, but as far as I know Vishal, he doesn’t seem to be a person who would do such an act,” one of the neighbours said.

The police, however, do not read too much into the absence of the family. “We believe they were at their residence on Monday. They might have gone to meet the advocate,” an officer said.

‘Doctor held for rape watched porn first’

The  hospital  doctor arrested for raping a patient in the intensive care unit allegedly watched pornographic clips stored in his mobile phone before sexually assaulting the woman.

“In her statement, the woman has said Dr Vishal Bane was going through pornographic clips in his cellphone before raping her. We have seized the mobile phone and sent it for analysis at the Forensic Sciences Laboratory at Kalina,” said inspector Rajkumar Chaphekar of Vashi police station.

The woman, 35 and a resident of Koparkhairane, was semiconscious when Bane allegedly raped her. Complaining of fatigue and giddiness while attending a Durga Puja ceremony in Sector 15 of Vashi, she was admitted to Lotus Hospital Saturday night.

Bane, the resident medical officer, advised she be moved to the ICU for the night as she was shivering and asked her family to wait outside. He allegedly raped her in the early hours of Sunday.

The police said she could understand she was being raped but was so was weak she could neither resist Bane nor raise an alarm. The next morning, when her husband met her, she told him she had been raped. The family lodged an FIR at Vashi police station and Bane was arrested Sunday afternoon and remanded in police custody till October 25.
