Captured Pak ultra says LeT has revived terror camps

SRINAGAR: A Pakistani terrorist nabbed by the Jammu and Kashmir police has said that he is a product of a terror training facility run by the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) in Pakistan. 

Addressing a crowded news conference at Srinagar’s police control room, he said the terror camps that were closed down after the ban on LeT, following the Mumbai attacks, have resumed operations. 

Authorities have pointed to these remarks as conclusive evidence of Islamabad not keeping its promise of cracking down on the training centres run by LeT. 

“I am Mohammad Saleem Rehmani. I had come for jihad to Kashmir and had requested my leaders to deploy me at a place (here), where I could inflict damages to the Indian forces,” a confidant young man told the media. 
“I do not think (after spending some time in Kashmir) that there is any need of jihad here,” but added, “I do not have any regrets (for becoming a terrorist and infiltrating into Kashmir).” 

Rehmani was part of an eight-member group that lost three members each in Lolab and Kangan. His leg was injured in the Kangan encounter where a cop was killed. “We detained him at Panzan village in Budgam and helped him to get better treatment,” a senior police officer said. 

Rehmani told reporters that there was a major crackdown carried out by the Pakistani army after the Mumbai attacks. “The army had taken over a major (training) facility in the Muzaffarabad jungles. “But now I am aware of at least five such facilities that have a good number of youth undergoing training.” 
IGP (Kashmir) S M Sahai said his account suggested that there are not less than 250 militants being trained for deployment in J&K. 

Police said Rehmani belonged to a middle class family and was belonged to the Barealvi school of thought. However, after his interactions with somebody in refugee camps he was influenced to join ‘jihadis.’ “He understands Islam and knows a lot,” one officer who interrogated him said. IGP Sahai also said separatist leaders and terrorists had links with stone pelters. “We have arrested Tehreek-e-Hurriyat’s tehsil president for Sopore Ghulam Mohammad Tantray. He had spent many days with a militant called Furqan. We have access to their telephone conversations, which has revealed several things.” 

Police officers said stone pelting was more intense in areas where there were militants. “We recently tracked a module that was working for militants,” an officer said. “The best of the stone pelters were assigned to throw grenades. They were given 18 grenades and by the time we nabbed them, they had already lobbed two.” 

Sahai said they have identified 135 employees of the state government who were involved in stone pelting. “Of the 60 detained, seven have already been booked under Public Safety Act.” Police believe the government will sack them for their activities.
