RAMALLAH, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Wednesday the Palestinians could make peace with Israel within weeks.
Erekat's remarks were in response to Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman who said Tuesday that reaching a peace deal with the Palestinians needs at least a decade.
"Lieberman's remarks reveal the nature of the two sides' positions regarding the peace process and the side that thwarts it, " Erekat told Xinhua. "We, the Palestinians, say that making peace needs only a few weeks."
Erekat added that Lieberman's statement "is another proof that the current Israeli government prefers the continuation of occupation, settlement, siege and war crimes."
He called on the United States, the European Union and Russia to "pay attention" to such statements and oblige Israel to commit to a new international plan for peace.
The U.S.-brokered negotiations stopped in September, after Israel resumed building settlements in the West Bank.
The Palestinians plan to go to the UN Security Council to seek recognition of their statehood, but Israel and Washington said the Palestinian state should come through negotiations, not a result of "unilateral measures." (xinhua)
