In a big blow to the Uttar Pradesh government's claims, former chief medical officer (CMO)
AK Shukla has been arrested.

The police on Tuesday arrested Shukla, who is an accused in the murder case of former CMO

Dr BP Singh.

Shukla was arrested in connection with a case of financial embezzlement in the UP Department of Health and Family Welfare, filed after the murder of Dr BP Singh.

The arrest came on a day when the Lucknow bench of Allahabad high court will take up the status report filed by the government on the probe in to mysterious death of Deputy CMO Dr Yogendra Singh Sachan, who died a day before he was to depose in court against Dr Shukla.

Both Dr Shukla and Dr Sachan were accused in the financial misappropriation case and the murder case of Dr BP Singh. Shukla was taken into custody from the Lucknow trauma centre where he was admitted on Monday.

The FIR in the murder case of Dr BP Singh was filed almost three months ago.

Meanwhile, the Lucknow bench of Allahabad HC will on Tuesday, apart from taking up the status report, hear the plea to transfer the probe into Dr Sachan’s death to the CBI.

The court had sought the status report on the FIR lodged at Gosaiganj police station on the complaint of Dr Sachan's wife Malti Sachan and on the basis of a PIL seeking CBI probe into his death.

It has also sought a status report of the judicial inquiry into Sachan's death being conducted by Chief Judicial Magistrate Rajesh Upadhyaya and report on information given by the jail authorities to Gosaiganj police station on the night when the medical officer was found dead.

CJM Upadhyaya is said to have submitted his report to the government which will be forwarded to the court.

The PIL prayed for a CBI probe on the ground that it was a complicated case and required to be probed by the premier investigating agency.
The Supreme Court is also likely to hear the case on July 14.
