China today “categorically extended” its “full support” to Pakistan’s “sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity” amid mounting US pressure that Islamabad has denounced as amounting to interference in its sovereign affairs.
Following a meeting with China’s Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani declared that “a friend of China is Pakistan’s friend, its enemy (is) Pakistan’s enemy and China’s security (is) Pakistan’s security.”
The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir and ambassadors of both countries. Meng met Pakistan army chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani shortly after arriving in Islamabad yesterday.
Later, Malik vowed to go after militants based in Pakistan who were targeting Chinese interests in its western provinces.
Meanwhile, the Afghan Taliban, whose activities lie at the heart of the US complaints, today took the unusual step of openly supporting Pakistan against the US.
“America wants to spread chaos in Pakistan, weaken its government and make it dependent upon them. That is why it is trying to make this government collide with its citizens... to show that there is what they like to call terrorist sanctuaries...,” the Taliban said in a statement.
The statement asked the people and government of Pakistan to give precedence to “Islamic and national interests”.
