PESHAWAR: At least five persons, including a woman and two children, were killed and 33 others sustained injuries in a powerful blast in the main Compact Disc (CD) market in Nishtarabad in the provincial capital on Monday night.

Sources say the two minor boys killed in the explosion could be the sons of the slain woman, who were passing through the area at the time of the blast. Officials of the bomb disposal unit (BDU) said around 10 kilogrammes of explosives planted in a motorbike were used in the blast in the locality where many CD shops are located.

Police officials said the motorcycle was parked on the roadside near Grace Market in the jurisdiction of the Hashtnagri Police Station. The explosion was triggered by a remote-controlled device at around 9:02 pm, police said.

The injured were transported to the Lady Reading Hospital where a state of emergency had already been declared. Security personnel cordoned off the area and did not allow people to go near the place of the occurrence to avoid being caught up in a follow-up blast. “People were returning home when the bomb went off in the busy part of the old city,” said a police official.

The blast was so powerful that it damaged a number of nearby shops and vehicles passing through the area. A trainee at an English language newspaper, Yusuf, was also injured in the blast and his motorbike was damaged.

A similar blast in the same market in March 2008 had killed one person and wounded 16 others. The CD business suffered after that blast and also due to other attacks across the province and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani condemned the blast and expressed grief over the loss of precious lives. Interior Minister Rahman Malik said the perpetrators would soon be taken to task. The militants have reportedly warned the shopkeepers running CD shops to shut their businesses.
