Criminal Face of India - Fake drugs.

Docs under scanner in fake drug case

CHENNAI: The CB-CID investigation in the spurious/expired drug case has reportedly exposed a larger conspiracy involving some doctors. According to highly-placed sources in the CB-CID, the accused told them they had used doctors to sell the spurious/expired drugs.

“Now we will have to identify the doctors who knowingly put their patients at risk. The accused told us that the kingpins had been using a section of doctors to sell the drugs, knowing well that they were spurious or expired. They have not divulged the names,” a CB-CID official said.

The city police investigation revealed that the racket had a dedicated group of medical representatives. Now, the CB-CID interrogation has found that these representatives would have offered money to doctors to lure them.

“Meenakshi Sundaram, Sanjay Kumar, Pradeep Chowdia and Manichettiyar controlled the day-to-day affairs of the trade in different parts of the state. These accused now have corroborated the evidence we have and told us that some doctors are also involved,” the official added.

“Till now we thought they supplied medicines only through drug stores. Many doctors have pharmacies at their homes and we suspect the drugs could have been sold through these,” the official added.

On Thursday, the CB-CID arrested Dhanalakshmi (45), a sweeper at the government hospital, on charges of selling medicines in the hospital to sellers of spurious drugs. Government-supplied drugs were seized from her house.

Government-supplied drugs were also seized during Thursday’s raid at a godown owned by Sanjay Kumar in Egmore. About Rs 2 crore worth of spurious/expired drugs were also seized.
