Students, teachers come together to break silence against child abuse
In a campaign against sexual abuse, a group of alumni of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) are in the city to spread awareness about the issue and urge the schools to form a counselling body to help students to fight child abuse.
The campaign — Chuppi Todo — demands passing of the ‘Prevention of Offences Against the Child Bill’.
The team interacted with the students of Billabong High School. “Every second child is sexually abused and it becomes very important for children to know what to do in such a situation. Even when most of the children decide to remain silent over the issue, we through our campaign are trying to break this silence. Children should speak out to their families, at least their mothers, so that immediate action can be taken,” said Sanjay Singh, convenor of the campaign.
The team is moving across the country visiting schools, conducting workshops and group discussions with the students. “We are also screening an educational film on the issue in all schools. Opening up in such an issue takes time. We had initially started with a pilot project in a small village where students took time to discuss their problems. We are urging the schools to build linkages where the students can open up and speak their mind,” said Singh.
