Govt depts gear up to end molestation, sexual abuse
ALLAHABAD: In an initiative to put a check on increasing cases of sexual exploitation of working women, the district authorities have come up with a novel proposal of constituting women sexual exploitation prevention committees in all government offices.
District magistrate, Allahabad, Sanjay Prasad has instructed subordinates to constitute such committees in all government offices/departments including health, PWD, education, police, municipal corporation etc wherein head of the department would be submitting their reports to district probation officer (DPO) on monthly basis thereby apprising him about the actions being initiated by them to check the menace.
Ironically, these measures have been initiated after numerous complaints by female workers against their male counterparts regarding misbehaviour, sexual abuse and molestation being faced by them in offices.
Senior administrative officials are offering a helping hand to working women asking them to lodge their complaints with the committee officials and corrective measures would be initiated thereby, said district magistrate, Sanjay Prasad while talking to TOI on Wednesday. He added that he has asked district probation officer to review the actions submitted by committees on routine basis.
"We are making efforts so that women employees are able to work in a healthy and friendly atmosphere in their respective offices with their male counterparts," added the district magistrate. He added that the aim behind such committees is to tighten the noose around erring officials\employees.
Insiders told TOI that there are over 40 government departments in Sangam city and thousands of women employees are workings there. With regular complains of misbehaviour and physical assault being reported, senior district authorities had taken a major initiative to offer relief to women employees in the government offices.
Recently, women employees of a government department had raised their voice against a senior male colleague apprising senior administrative officers against his habit of passing lewd remarks and demanded stringent action against him.
"There is a growing number of mental and physical torture on women employees and those involved in such acts should be punished," said an official adding that request has been made to fairer sex to raise their voice and consult the committee members to get the matter sorted out.
