A 20-year-old from New Zealand who posted a photograph of his former girlfriend naked on Facebook has been jailed for four months.

Sentencing Joshua Simon Ashby, in the Wellington court, a judge ruled that a newspaper cameraman could photograph the defendant and ordered him to stop hiding his face behind a sheet of paper.

Judge Andrew Becroft said "there was a certain symmetry to it," the New Zealand-based Dominion Post reported.

The judge said Ashby posted the photo on the woman's Facebook page in an "irresponsible drunken jealous rage" after their five-month relationship broke up.

It was available to all 500 million active users of the network for 12 hours before police and Facebook authorities removed it.

Ashby pleaded guilty to a charge of distributing indecent matter and six other charges of threatening to kill, wilful damage, stealing the woman's clothes and assault
