Nearly 100 taken ill by food poisoning, cops seal Ghaziabad factory

Nearly 100 people in west UP were taken ill after they consumed food prepared from buckwheat flour while observing the Ram Navami fast. Buckwheat flour or kattu atta is used to prepare food during fasts.
City Magistrate of Bulandshahr, G Tripathi, said 59 persons who complained of vomiting after consuming food items made from buckwheat flour were hospitalised. All were discharged after getting first aid.
According to Chief Medical Officer Jai Singh, people started getting admitted in the hospital with complaints of food poisoning since Monday.
In Muzaffarnagar, at least 22 devotees suffered food poisoning on Tuesday after consuming ‘prasad’ made of ‘atta’ during the Navaratra festival. They were taken to hospital following complaints of headache, vomiting and fever, said police. One shopkeeper Brijbhushan was arrested in this connection.
Later in the evening, the police registered an FIR against owners of a factory for allegedly selling adulterated buckwheat flour. The Dhameja Grinder factory in Ghaziabad, which sells flour under the brand name of “Kitchen”, has been sealed and the owners detained for questioning.
According to the police, they found the victims had consumed food items made with ‘Kitchen’ brand buckwheat flour.
“Shopkeepers informed us that they had purchased ‘Kitchen’ flour from a factory in Ghaziabad. On the basis of their information, we registered a case against owners of factory”, said SSP of Bulandshahr RKS Rathore.
A sample of the flour has been sent for examination.
