Aligarh:  The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has been shut down indefinitely after two rival groups of students clashed with each other last night.

One of the student groups belongs to Azamgarh and the other predominantly has students from Bihar. The two groups clashed with each other, opened fire and ransacked university property late last night.

Over 10 students have been injured in these clashes.

Students from Azamgarh had levelled allegations against the Deputy Controller of AMU for irregularities in admission procedure and sought his removal.

He was also assaulted by the students on Thursday.

While the Bihar lobby of students was backing the deputy controller, the AMU administration has ordered a complete shutdown of the university.

"Two groups had some fight, there was firing too, many students were injured and they are in hospital. Their treatment is on. Around 11 to 12 students have been injured," said Anil Kumar, District Magistrate.

All students have been asked to vacate the hostels within the next 48 hours.

"We have given students 48 hours to empty the university. We saw a clash yesterday and saw one clash today. We have to ensure no more clashes happen and hope everybody goes back to their respective places. For this we have PAC and we have recommended from the RFTA company. Adequate arrangements have been made," said SSP Satyavir Singh.

However, no arrests have been made so far after the clashes broke out.
