Darjeeling (WB), Apr 28 (PTI) The sleepy hamlet of Lamhatta off Darjeeling town is happy after its now-famous resident Lobsang Sangay got elected as the Prime Minister of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile. The remote village, where Sangay was born and raised, is however holding the celebration till assembly elections are over, Sangay's friend Sonam Chopy Norbu told PTI.
Sangay had his primary education at the Central School at Sonada near Lamhatta and did his plus 2 from St. Joseph College in Darjeeling before moving to Delhi University to do his LLB. After graduation, he went to the Harvard Law School for further studies. At present, except for Sangay's grandfather, none other in the family lives at the village. However, they occasionally visit the village where a good number of Tibetans reside and the villagers are anxiously waiting for one of those 'rare' visits to celebrate.
43-year-old Sangay polled 55 per cent votes out of 49189, defeating his nearest rival Tethong Tenzin Namgyal by 8,646 votes, according to the results announced yesterday.
