Anti-nuclear march
April 25, 2011

Thousands of people have marched in Tokyo to demand an end to nuclear power in Japan and a switch to alternative energy after the crisis at an atomic plant hit by the March 11 earthquake. Brandishing placards bearing the slogan: ''Bye Bye Genpatsu'' (Goodbye Nuclear Power), demonstrators walked along a route from Yoyogi Park in the centre of the capital. Organisers estimated 5000 took part on Sunday.

Monks beaten

A video of unrest at a Tibetan monastery in China where a monk burnt himself to death has been posted on the Voice of America website. Sources said Chinese soldiers and officials went through the Kirti monastery in a Tibetan region of China's Sichuan province last week questioning monks and beating those whose answers were ''not as the officials and soldiers required''.

Dies after mishap

A 73-year-old Englishwoman who was accidentally dropped into the Norwegian Sea as rescue workers took her off a cruise ship late last month has died, the hospital where she was treated says. Janet Richardson, who fell ill while on a Scandinavian cruise, spent four minutes in freezing water after coast guard officers dropped her stretcher during the transfer to a rescue boat on March 29.
