PESHAWAR: Four children were killed and three others wounded when an explosive device planted near a pond in Jerma village of Kohat district went off on Wednesday, local administration officials said. The blast took place near a pond where some children had been playing, the officials said. Eyewitnesses, however, gave an opposite account of the incident, saying that a hand grenade was thrown that resulted in the deaths of four children, aging between seven and nine years. The three injured were ferried to the Kohat District Headquarters Hospital. staff report

An investigation into the cause of the explosion is under way. Local reports say the children may have been playing with a shell or had trod on a mine.
Police say the victims, aged between seven and nine, were swimming in a pond near the town of Kohat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The area has seen clashes between government troops and Taliban fighters.
"I talked to the bomb disposal officers at the scene and they said it was some type of explosive, maybe a mine, maybe a grenade," Zafar Iqbal - a police official in Kohat - told the AFP news agency.
More than 4,200 people have been killed across Pakistan in attacks blamed on the Taliban and other Islamist extremist networks based in the tribal belt since 2007.

The incident occurred in Jerma village of Kohat district in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
"The explosive device was lying in field where the children were playing. Four children were killed instantly by the blast," a security official said.
The official said it was yet to be ascertained how the device went off.
A majority of the population of Jerma village are people displaced by anti-militancy operations in the Waziristan tribal region.
The injured children were taken to a nearby hospital.

In a separate incident, a powerful bomb exploded outside the office of police chief of Charasdda district though there were no casualties.
The bomb was planted outside the office.
The blast damaged the office and blew out its windows.
Police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation.
