1. Gao Shan - A former Bank of China bank manager, Gao fled to Canada in January 2005, allegedly with 839 million yuan (£79m) of money he had stolen from the bank. China and Canada do not have an extradition treaty, and Canada is a favourite destination for Chinese criminals.
Briefly arrested in 2007, Gao won the right to stay in Canada at an immigration appeal.
2. Gao Yan - the former party secretary of Yunnan province and the general manager of the State Power Corporation, Gao fled to Australia in 2002. It remains unclear how much money he may have taken with him, but a 2003 audit showed that the management team at State Power had used 21.1 billion yuan illegally.
3. Yang Xiuzhu - Ms Yang, former vice mayor of Wenzhou in charge of construction, fled to Singapore and then to the US in April 2003 with an alleged 253 million yuan. Ms Yang is thought to have bought several properties in New York.
4. Dong Mingyu - The former general manager of the Henan Garment Import & Export company fled to the US in 1995. It is unclear how much money may have been embezzled, but reports suggested Mr Dong had taken at least £6 million.
